Thanks for the kind words, though encouragement isn’t really what we’re after. The project has been in development for over a year, three of us work on it, progress has been steady, and we are now on our seventeenth release.

No software is perfect, but this one works well and has found a solid user base, even if that isn’t very visible on this forum.

You’re welcome to try it: that is exactly what the free version is for. If you have concrete suggestions, we will consider them on their merits, as we do with every piece of feedback we receive.

I’ve noticed what appears to be a bug in version 4.2.2 involving the **Previous Frame** button near the beginning of an image sequence.

My typical workflow is to start playback at the beginning of a captured reel and play forward until I reach the start of the actual film content. I then stop playback and use the Previous Frame button to step backward, frame by frame, to identify the exact point where the leader ends and the film begins. Once identified, I cut and exclude the leader.

The problem occurs when stepping backward near the beginning of the sequence. Instead of moving back one frame, the Previous Frame button suddenly jumps approximately 30 frames **forward** , then begins stepping backward from that new position.

Once this happens, I can only step backward through those approximately 30 frames before it jumps forward again, preventing me from reaching the actual beginning of the film.

This is particularly problematic when the start of the film is within the first 1–20 frames of the sequence, as I can no longer accurately identify the cut point using frame-by-frame navigation.

We have reproduced the issue: during the first second of the film, “Previous frame” jumps forward instead of moving back by one frame. This has been fixed and the fix will be included in the upcoming version 4.2.3.

In the meantime, to access the very first frames: click “Start” (Ctrl+←), then move forward using “Next frame” (→).

🎞 AvyScan Lab 4.2.3 — see every real pixel while you tune your filters, and much faster 4K

🔍 Real pixels

✅ New magnifier button next to the preview scale: it shows the corrected image at one image pixel per screen pixel, exactly as it will be exported. Adjust grain, sharpness or any other filter while you look at the real detail

✅ Click and drag to move around the image; the view stays in place while your settings are recalculated. Click again or double-click to return to the whole image

✅ Click and drag also moves an image enlarged with the mouse wheel

⚡ 4K scans

✅ Preview at 1:1: on large images with a heavy filter chain, the number of simultaneous calculations now adapts to what your computer’s memory can hold. On a measured 4K scan, reloading after a setting change drops from about 4 minutes to under 20 seconds, with playback just as smooth

✅ Export: the same adaptation applies. On a measured 4K scan, 300 frames in 40 minutes instead of 59

✅ While a heavy export starts, which can take a few minutes, the bar shows “Starting” with the elapsed time, and the “Encoding appears stuck” warning no longer appears as long as the calculation progresses

🛠 Everyday comfort

✅ PNG and JPEG sequences are now read frame by frame, like TIFF: a jump in the timeline is immediate wherever it lands, instead of up to 40 s towards the end of the film

✅ Near the start of a clip, “Prev frame” steps back one frame again; the very first frames can be reached frame by frame

✅ The insufficient disk space warning now also covers FFV1 exports

✅ An extension typed in the “Renamed” column (for example “film.mp4”) is no longer doubled in the file name

Thank you for the update!

Regarding your update installation process, if all settings and user data are preserved, and the entire installation takes approximately 15 seconds, including uninstalling the previous version, why is there a YES or NO option when updating? I’m struggling to understand under what circumstances I would choose NO, or why selecting YES wouldn’t be the recommended approach in every case.

Hi,

When a previous version is present, an installer can update it in two different ways. AvyScan Lab lets you choose between:

Yes: clean reinstall (recommended). The previous version is completely uninstalled, and the new one is installed into an empty folder. Files that the older version used but the new one does not need are removed, leaving the installed program to match exactly the new version. This is the safest choice, and the one we recommend for normal use.

No: in-place update. The new program files are copied over the old installation, and nothing else in the folder is touched. There are two situations where this is the right choice:

You keep your own files inside the AvyScan Lab installation folder. For instance, advanced users who write their own filters sometimes put additional AviSynth plugins (DLLs) next to ours. A clean reinstall would remove the whole program folder, and hence those files. An in-place update would leave them alone.

I believe I have already addressed your request.
When the perforation is no longer visible, it cannot be detected, and therefore cannot be used for stabilization. Furthermore, it is not possible to apply different types of stabilization throughout the course of a single film. Stabilization based on the perforation works very well, provided that the perforation is correctly defined within the filter.
In fact, if you look at the perforation in your clip within the attached video, I personally find it to be well-stabilized.
