@MrCapri, if you can integrate a Raspberry Pi into your build, you might want to check out gPhoto2 for controlling your camera. This allows you to control most DSLR and DSLM type cameras programatically from a Linux machine (the Pi included). Depending on the camera you use, you can control more or less functions, but the basics (such as releasing the shutter or setting the shutter speed/aperture) work on most models. All you need in hardware is your camera’s USB cable plugged into the Pi. Just check for what functions are compatible with your camera. There is also loads of beginner’s tutorials around the internet, so you should easily be able to get started.
