I’ve done some stupid things out of clumsiness—like causing a short circuit with a screwdriver dropped in the wrong spot, or even outright wiring errors—and I’m always surprised that I’ve never managed to destroy a single component. Good luck with the rest of the project, and keep us posted !

My track record is worth. I’ve fried all green diodes in new lighting assembly because of wrong wires, so now I’ll have two of them. It’s all a learning curve.

Hi Roland, I’m volonteer in an airplane museum and in charge of film scanning. I will build your machine in the next months and I’m already looking for one Basler camera. I found a BASLER a2A3840-45ucBAS 8.3 MP USB 3.0 on ebay for a good price. Is this a good choice for your scanner?

Hey olc,

it’s a rolling shutter camera, so it won’t work with continuous motion of film. Not the best pick in this case.

Welcome Olivier.

I’m always delighted to see the project gaining new followers.

It’s a fairly big undertaking that takes a few months to complete, but it has been very rewarding.

As for the camera, Andry is right: to use my software, you need one with a global shutter and a USB output. That said, everyone is free to adapt the design to their own ideas.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Hi Roland, thanks for your fast answer.

To introduce myself, I already modified one projector for S8 format, one Heurtier tri-films for 8, 9.5 and 16 formats and I build one Guguroller for 35 format. When I discovered your design, I was impressed by the simplicity of setup depending of film formats. My goal now is to build one machine which will be easy to use for ‘inexperienced’ people from the museum where I am volunteer.

I have two questions:

- Is a rolling shutter camera compatible with you software?
- If yes, I will have to use the stop and go mode?

Hi, and thank you for introducing yourself. Your experience with all those different film formats sounds very relevant to this project.

My scanner is designed to work only with global-shutter cameras. With a rolling-shutter camera, the film movement would cause geometric distortion during image capture.

You would therefore have to stop the film for each exposure and use a stop-and-go transport. But the main advantage of this scanner is precisely its continuous film transport: the film keeps moving while each frame is captured.

So, for this design, a global-shutter camera is essential.

Before I get some well deserved sleep I decided that I should maybe leave a few paragraphs here. 🙂

So I will just mention @Roland and @Andriy_But

It is very important to me to have a scanner that will support large 35mm reels, but as Roland said, the weight could be an issue. One Solution might be to add additional supports to the arms to take some of the load away, but that would not help with the larger weight on the 3d printed parts.

Since I Plan to print in PETG, the issue might be resolvable with plenty of infill and some good luck.

The only other option would be to redesign the whole mounting system which I want to avoid. My dream is a scanner in the shape of the Lasergraphics ScanStation. That of course would add all sorts of new challenges, which would result in a loss of benefits of Rolands design.

That being said, im only 18 years old, so I dont have all the experience that other people in this forum have, but im willing to learn.

Building a scanner is a very expensive undertaking. Being a Trainee my salary isnt the highest, so money is very tight. Im also in the process of getting my drivers license, which in Germany has gotten very expensive.

I already have a Basler Camera that I got for a cheap price on ebay, but its rolling shutter. Obviously that isnt that well suited for this design, but since there is a stop motion mode, I think that it should be ok. I will loose a lot of speed to avoid artifacts, but I can deal with that.

Regarding light - yes you are correct, Roland. Projectors did not have RGB light, but a Scanner is a very different device, which should aim to get the maximum quality out of the scanned material. RGB also offers much better performance for negative film (which has been discussed here already) and that is one of my goals - scanning negative and faded materials in the highest possible quality. I thought about your solution with the array of LEDs, but I worry about diffussion, especially with 35mm. YUJILED used to make Large COB LEDs that were about the size of a 35mm frame and were 50W. Ideal for a project like this, but sadly YUJI has discontinued their 50W and 100W COBs with the desired size and color temperature. The next step up would be 130W, which I dont wanna go for since that would need a lot of cooling and will most likely be way too much light for such a scanner. Another option might be to underpower the LED, but that could risk altering its characteristisc and may affect its CRI (?).

So, Andriy, have you made any progess? 🙂

Some Pro Scanners do three exposures for RGB. Could that be easier to do with proper diffusion?

For 16mm and Super 8 the diffusion of your design should be fine, but sadly not for 35mm.

Another thing to consider in my case is my dependency on the stop motion function. The goal is of course to reduce exposure time as much as possible to reduce artifacts that might be caused by vibration, but that means a lot of light is needed. Can your setup supply such power?

I think thats all I have to say for now.

I wish you all a nice week and await your replies 🙂

Kind Regards from Germany

Mark

Hello,

I see a few points in your project that will be difficult to address.

First, regarding the camera: in my view, it is not the right choice, although I understand the budget constraint. This camera will force you to use stop-motion, which I find very limiting.

Second, stop-motion works with my scanner, but with 35mm reels weighing over 5 kg and having large diameters, it will not be practical. There will be too much inertia, forcing you to reduce the film transport speed and therefore lengthen the scan time.

As for the reel weight, if you only plan to scan 35mm—or even 16mm—you should reconsider the scanner’s design. My priority is films up to 16mm, and 35mm films on “reasonably sized” reels. On the other hand, with my system, you will have no lighting issues, either in terms of intensity or uniformity.

Best of luck with the rest of the project!

Hey,

first of all I believe working on such project will give you a ton of fun and you’ll gain plenty of experience. When I first saw Roland’s assembly I had zero understanding of everything, just the pure motivation to try things on my own. Now my scanner is completely another machine tailored for my own needs and approach to scanning. I’ll show you my progress shortly, I’m quite sure Mr. Roland would be satisfied 😂

regarding the RGB - you’re overthinking at this point, your main goal would be to get to the point where you have working transport and capture. Once you deal with that you’ll be able to experiment with lighting fixtures as you wish. My experiments with custom RGB source have mixed feelings now. The intensity of color LEDs is significantly lower than white lights, which would be ok for stop motion approach but still. It requires careful balancing and deep understanding of color science. I’ve had decent results with cheap BXRC led and it also worked for color and black and white. Now I’m using two different sets of lights as modular add on to switch between different stocks. My light assembly costs roughly 100$ including shipping which is far more than 10$ COBs, and it requires specific wiring and driving of separate channels. I’m already thinking to increase amount of LEDs up to 10 times to match what I want and it will drive the price even further. Don’t think about RGB now, work with what’s available, you’ll be surprised how many things influence the final scan and lights aren’t the most impactful)

For the load on the reels I see no problems making the frame tilted 10-15 degrees while keeping the whole system as it is. It will reduce stress on motors.

Hello again,

thank you both for your replies. Slow scanning is something i can tolerate. If I can push the system to 5FPS id be more than happy.

Yes, I may be overthinking about light haha. The main goal is indeed to have the transport built and camera set up etc. I would pick YUJILED 10W COBs at first. My idea was to build the scanner the way I want from the start, but that is very expensive and not an easy task, so it is actually better to build something that works - then improve on it.

If I have a working system I can make some nice scans with white light too and also scan a few things for others to earn a little money to improve the scanner further. By tilting do you mean the whole scanner or just the reel-arms? I thought about that too.

Roland,

One question. I have been working on printing components and mounting frames and I have a small doubt regarding the distance center to center of the MGN12C rails. I understand that it is 110 mm but some older diagram may have shown them at 100 mm. Could you please confirm.

Could I get the CAD files (e.g., STEP) for the “Boitier avant pour PCB” enclosure, as I would like to make some modifications?
