I’m raised with homemovies, regular8, and started in 1977 doing my own movies, regular8 later Super8 and flirtet with 16mm. All formats with and without anamorphic lenses kowa 2x and later iscorama 1,5x.
Now I make movies with Lumix GH5.
I read several books about shooting film.
Lenny Lipton and other authors made the difference for me.
“Filming the Gate” was the keyword for copying movies.
About 16 years ago I started doing telecine by filming the gate on a very High level (750p), however, I was disapointed with colourresolution. I then got the idea to scan every single frame…but at that time the problem was cameras, capacity, software and the performance of the consumer pc…and money.
Then I discovered the Kinograph-project, especially the projekt in Libanon. That was an eyecatcher! Now I transfer all 60 homemovies in 5K with my old Gh4 using a Navitar 50mm lens or Schneider Componon 50mm macro on a modified Siemens 800 (heavy and steady) projektor for the regular8 movies. Transferring the pictures into a 4K movie, and make corrections in 4K, then downsize to FullHD. Wonderfull results !! The Siemens has 2 grabbers wide (!) apart from each other, which gives a more straight and steady movement of the film. Downside: 1,5fps, but it is okay, because of the results it gives. No crash at all and simpel !
I’m converting another projektor for Super8 now.
But, and now it’s breaking news: I got hardware mechanical tools to make a scanner with continues drive. The filmpath and gate are completed (!) .The Electric drive, take-up movement is not finished yet, but the main problem is the trigger (shuttercontrol) and a camera (with global shutter)…and money of course.
My experience so far is, that the bigger the sensor of a camera is, You get better results. Less corrections is needed, and the lightmanagement is superb. I have an Imaging Source camera and a Rasp Hq cam, but at this point of time disapointed.
I’m reading the website because of the spirit: a scanner for everyone, and I agree!
The Wolverine-scanner is actually a step in right direction, but the movement and the camera is awfull…yes I got one, so I know what I’m talking about. We have all our own standards, this is not mine, but maybe a basic for modifying to some better.
I just saw on YouTube a movie of a 16K scanner. The best part was the movement of the film in the scanner and the camera is a linescan-camera…impressiv!
That’s all for now, I’ll post pictures asp.
Thank’ s and best wishes to all of You
