This topic came from a place of figuring out how to best and budget-consciously choose a camera for a home film scanner hobby project, which I’d say is a much different approach than picking parts for a proper product.
It could be useful to seperate the forum into hobbyist and professional machine design, but that’s up to Mathew, of course.
which mode in the edsdk did you use for capturing (lifeview or a real shutter)?. I was worring that using a real shutter event would limit the lifetime of the camera, 100k + could be too much for it?
At that point I was using Magic Lantern to capture 18fps raw video. There’a also a mode for single frame capture (silent.mo), which does not wear out the shutter, but the 5DII only properly supports resolutions around FHD, so I went with the PiHQ in the end.
By now I’ve captured around 350k frames, so shutterless is a must .
Yes, you absolutely have to choose a DSLR with an electronic shutter (silent mode), otherwise the camera’s lifespan will be very limited! CANON’s edsdk kit is rich in features, but only under Windows and in C++ or Cs, which is not particularly easy for the developer. There is a Python interface that seems to work well. Captured images can either be downloaded immediately to the PC or stored on the SD card for later copying. I have not yet evaluated the fps in these two cases.
