Hey film friends!
It’s too long ago that I posted on this forum, but after all it also took me more than seven years to finish my DIY film scanner project.
The goal was not only to build an affordable, simpe to use scanner with amazing quality, but to make it available as a kit for anyone who wants to do the same. It’s completely open source.
It is basically two things:
- a controller board that sits like a hat on the Raspberry Pi. That board not only hosts a full Arduino, but also provides a flexible driver for DC motors, a powerful constant current driver for LEDs, adjustable power out for a cooling fan, input for two optical sensors (part of the kit) for main shaft and film end, spindle pots for exact adjustments, 8 comfy keys to control the projector/scanner, and a few GPIOs for, further, custom expansions.
- A pretty advanced pack oft software, provided as an uSD card image for the Raspi. That software package flashes and handles the controller board, runs the scanner service on the Raspi, controls the camera, handles storage to local disks or via network, and provides an appliance-like UX/GUI for the scanner operator.
Instead of describing it all again in full detail, let me point you to

- the project wiki (incl. a small intro video)
- the store where you can get a ready made board and some accessories
