The choice to use those fins to support the sphere was definitely related to print time and not wanting too much support material - your design certainly provides an outer surface shape that is more conducive to mounting the sphere and adding things like active cooling.
I think both designs have great approaches. There are a variety of factors to consider and each had their own use case to solve for. Perhaps there is grounds for a hybrid approach here marrying the mounting and printing advantages together in a single design that could be used for v2. Anyone interested in taking that on?
